Textual Cohesion in Journal Article Abstracts by Chinese and Native English Scholars in Applied Linguistics: A Comparative Study

As an indispensable part of journal article, English abstract can promote the sharing and exchange international academic achievements. Cohesion coherence are important criteria a good abstract. Based on Halliday Hasan’s cohesion theory, this study compares 60 abstracts written by Chinese native scholars. The results show that ellipsis substitution rarely used, while reference conjunction often employed, with no obvious difference; scholars apply lexical significantly more than scholars; frequency repetition is highest in both corpora. findings suggest have made considerable strides writing recent years. Implications may be provided for researchers about how to write coherent
